The 'Rose' was the first vessel built at Nantucket specifically for the China trade, launched in the spring of 1803. On July 29, 1803, the 'Rose' set sail for Canton, arriving after an eventful journey, at Macao on April 11, 1804. Many of the ships loading at Canton, especially the large British East Indiamen, took months to aquire a full cargo for the return voyage.
But the small 'Rose' only required two months to secure a full hold, thereby avoiding the treacherous winter storms that were often encountered in the South China Seas. Leaving Whampoa on June 10, 1804, the 'Rose' arrived back at Nantucket, again after a very eventful voyage, on March 5, 1805.
In 1988 I went to China for research purposes and travelled along the Pearl River to Canton, passing Whampoa on the way and information gleaned on this trip proved invaluable for this painting.
