At Noon on Wednesday, 10th April 1912, the White Star liner R.M.S. Titanic cast her lines from the White Star Dock, Southampton and began what was to become the most famous maiden voyage in history.  With Captain Edward J. Smith on the bridge and towed by the tug Neptune, assisted by tugs Hercules, Albert Edward Hector Ajax and Vulcan, the huge liner was maneuvered into the River Test.  I have lived all my life near Southampton and have vivid memories of seeing the great liners Queen Mary Queen Elizabeth and Mauretania from the trains that passed very close to the dry docks there.  I also remember going on a passenger ferry to view the S.S. United States as she arrived on her maiden voyage.  I toured the Queen Mary when she was at the Ocean Dock, as the White Star Dock was renamed, and have made a few voyages from Southampton Docks.  My painting shows the Titanic as she is edged away from the dockside, the Neptune towing and tugs Albert Edward Hercules and Vulcan at her bow. The above talk took place on Wednesday, July 19th, and went very well, so I am informed. I thought it might be interesting to reproduce part of the talk here.  The rescue of the crew of the H.P.Kirkham is regarded as one of the most dramatic rescues in the history of lifesaving, and one that was recognized by the U.S. Government by awarding a Gold Medal to Captain Chase, and a Silver Medal to each of the lifesaving crew.  The H.P.Kirkham was a three-masted schooner, carrying a crew of seven men, sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia on Saturday 16th January 1892 bound for New York, loaded with salt and pickled fish. On the night of January 20th she was battling her way through heavy seas and had become lost in the driving sleet of the storm.  At seven oclock that night she struck heavily on the dreaded Rose & Crown Shoal, some 15 miles off Great Point, Nantucket.  Within an hour a portion of the schooners bow was torn away by the force of the sea and she settled down on the shoal.  The crew had to take to the rigging as the decks were awash. They dragged mattresses into the rigging and set light to them to act as flares. All they could do was to wait helplessly, hoping that their distress signals had been spotted.  The Keeper of Sankaty Lighthouse had thought that he had seen flares during the night. At daybreak on the 21st, using a telescope, he spotted the masts   ");

On July 29, 1803, the Rose set sail for Canton, arriving after an eventful journey, at Macao on April 11, 1804. Many of the ships loading at Canton, especially the large British East Indiamen, took months to aquire a full cargo for the return voyage. But the small Rose only required two months to secure a full hold, thereby avoiding the treacherous winter storms that were often encountered in the South China Seas. Leaving Whampoa on June 10, 1804, the Rose arrived back at Nantucket, again after a very eventful voyage, on March 5, 1805. In 1988 I went to China for research purposes and travelled along the Pearl River to Canton, passing Whampoa on the way and information gleaned on this trip proved invaluable for this painting. A self taught artist working primarily in oils, he began by portraying equestrian portraits. The son of a Naval Officer and a passionate sailor, he soon turned to specialising in marine scenes, distinguished by their meticulous detail and atmospheric effects, he turned to painting full time in 1979. A frequent exhibitor at the Royal Society of Marine Artists annual exhibitions in London for many years, he has also had many of his paintings published as Fine Art prints, one of them becoming the third highest selling print in the country. Rodney has travelled extensively to research his paintings, including Hong Kong, China and Nova Scotia and is a frequent visitor to America. There is a permanent display of his work at Nantucket, Massachusetts USA and a book of his paintings detailing the marine history of the famous island was published in 1989. He illustrated the book The Famine Ships, published in 1996 and the paintings formed a major exhibition of the artists work at the South Street Seaport Museum New York in 1998. With tall ship sailing experience aboard the topsail schooner Malcolm Miller and racing regularly in X boats at Lymington, Hampshire, where he lives, Charman has plenty of opportunity to experience the elements that he has chosen to portray.
